An EGGcellent Reason to Have Backyard Chickens

Updated: Jul 20, 2021

When my clients or new friends find out I have backyard chickens, they usually always want to know why. My first reason - multiple layers of green and good deeds: being more self sufficient, chickens helping my yard and gardens, knowing where my food is coming from and being a good chicken steward.

The second reason (kind of a combo of one of the above reasons): EGGS! Sadly, all of the pics below came off my phone (!?) and these aren't even all of them. I know, I know....it's sad. But, in my defense, it's so much fun seeing the little critters you take care of give you these tasty gifts every day. It kinda makes me feel like all warm and fuzzy inside! I've never gotten tired of walking out to my backyard and collecting my eggs, not once in the 7+ years I've had chickens.

Fun facts...a.k.a. EGGcellent facts (facts from Mother Earth News):

  1. 1⁄3 less cholesterol

  2. 1⁄4 less saturated fat

  3. 2⁄3 more vitamin A

  4. 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids

  5. 3 times more vitamin E

  6. 7 times more beta carotene

The above info is based on chickens being able to get out and eat grass, which they love to do and I'd strongly encourage you to do if they aren't going to free range in your yard. But be warned - chickens love to kick up your mulched flower beds!
